Exercises
of Practical:- Life No
other occupation which can be undertaken by a child at this age
(2yrs - 5yrs) can be more important for her wholesome development
–physical, mental and moral, than these 'Exercises of Practical
Life' as they are called. They appeal to a child's intelligence and
the child finds herself attracted to these materials. Movements
involved are very simple. 'Thought', 'Will' and 'Action' come
together and they lay the basis for an integrated personality. All
these occupations come under the heading of 'Synthetic Movement' -
that is movement ordered and directed by the mind for an intelligent
purpose.
This part of the curriculum will cover preliminary activities like
opening and closing containers, sorting objects, pairing objects,
threading beads, wooden sockets, puzzles to educational toys, and
then move on to working mats, rolling mats to sitting on a mat, how
to hold, lift or put down a glass, jug etc, folding and unfolding
napkins to the extent of laying the table, putting clothes to dry,
making shapes with dough or even dishwashing.
The child also learns social behavior activities - how to greet,
talk, cough, sneeze, yawn, wait, response or observe a presentation.
Sensorial
Activities:- Senses act as 'Scouts' of information. They
are agents for exploring and collecting information from the
environment. They are the gateways to intelligence – bringing in the
raw material to catalogue, classify, think, assimilate, co-relate
and bring order. Dr. Montessori writes, " Without this ordering he
would not be able to go beyond the sensorial aspect." "Our sensorial
materials provide a kind of guide to observation, for it classifies
the impressions that each sense can receive".
Having acquired the mental order - the awareness continues to grow.
The child re-enters the environment consciously and intelligently.
Different tools used are means of development.
Dimensional materials like Cylinder blocks, Pink Tower, Broad
Stairs, Long Stairs. Sound materials like Noise boxes. Colour
material like colour tablets so on and so forth.
The child will have exercises around all these materials and will
also have drawing inserts.
Arithmetic
:- The sky is the limit for various math activities. The
more interesting and variable they are, induces a love for numbers
and therefore a solid foundation for math.
The school will have activities using different tools right from
number rods, sand paper figures, spindle box, zero activity, chit
game to cards and counters, Even & Odd.
The children will have worksheets around 1 - 10, to special
exercises with number hide activities, before, after and between,
more or less.
Unending activities will end with projects on Time, measuring, Bar
graphs, and Symmetry.
Language
:- Every child would have learned their 'home' or 'first'
language but will now have to learn to communicate in English. This
is the medium of instruction in most schools in the city. Thus in
our language curriculum teaching of English conversation, reading,
writing, comprehension and discussions will be taught through
various activities.
Pre-Reading activities, recognition of common things, plenty of
stories, rhymes with aids such as puppets, flannel boards or
pictures. Plenty of conversation with children right from news to
the weather to anything of interest. Sandpaper letters, Oral
Phonetic analysis, and movable alphabet to listen.
Furthermore, children will be given worksheets related to matching
sounds, word building, chains and puzzles.
Introduction of writing is done, followed by naming words, action
words, describing words.
As prior projects will be done on letters learnt, seasons,
celebrations.
A Web will be made for projects which will finally lead to Social
Studies, Science, Geography, Story, Rhymes, Drama connected to the
topic.
Art &
Craft:- Simple Pattern Writing to joining dots, colouring,
painting, cutting, pasting even tattering paper and crumpling them
will form a part of your child’s daily Art & Craft. It is at this
age when creativity can be recognised to encourage and enhance all
throughout the child’s future.
Music:-
This is something that brings-in life to any Pre-school.
An exercise which builds self-confidence in them, self-liking as
well through a very unique methodology of togetherness or teamwork.
Your child will learn rhythm and will always stay in tune. Singing,
movement to music, playing instruments, drama to dancing - all form
part of this curriculum.
Play
Activities:- Young children learn a
great deal through play activities, or rather they learn the most
only through activities out of which play plays a vital role. Every
play enterprise leads to building of thinking skills, communication,
learning to share and follow 'rules'. They add to the child’s motor
development and problem solving skills.
An indoor and an outdoor environment consisting of a house corner,
sand pit, water play area etc. will help the child to enhance these
skills.
